Welcome to the story of the Griffiths Family of Richmond NSW, Launceston,
Tasmania and Port Fairy, Victoria. This site is dedicated to the memory of
Jonathan Griffiths 1773-1839 and his wife Eleanor MacDonald / MacDaniel 1770-
1831, both transported to Australia and who by work and perseverance secured
prosperity for their children.
This site is for your use to store and share information on our family.
Jonathans early life was that of an orphan in England, transported as a
convict youth on the 2nd fleet he made the most of the opportunities in his
new
country and went on to become a very rich merchant (reported to be the richest
man in northern Tasmania) when he was in his 50's and then ironically was
buried in an unmarked grave at Port Fairy Victoria in 1839.
We wonder what Jonathan would have thought if he knew the legacy he created
with many thousands of people descending from him. I am sure he would be very
proud as records show family was very important to him. During his lifetime
Jonathan had made provision for his children with assignments of land and
financial assistance. As the law of primogeniture was prevalent at that time
it
would appear that Jonathan's estate would devolve to the eldest living son
John.
Many people have researched the family over the years, John Chilstone was one
that worked diligently during the 1980's & 1990's I thank him for passing this
information to be used on this site also Peter Achurch for giving me a start
with Ged file also the help I have received from Marie Griffiths and Karen Mus.
As time permits this site will be updated with the stories and information we
have but if you have anything to add or old photo etc please contact me for a
pass word also let us know if you find any mistakes.
